Pyrography

Pyrography is the ancient art of burning patterns, images, or words into wood. It is very similar to pokerwork. Heat is provided by either a soldering iron type of instrument, which has a point or shaped piece on the end; or by a pen shaped instrument with a shaped wire on the end. This is applied to the wood, and leaves a mark. The longer you leave the metal or wire in contact with the wood, the darker the mark. Ready cut and prepared wood pieces are available to buy, meaning the pyrographer can simply make his mark! This has been very much hubby’s skill. He has made hundreds of these. Placemats grace our own dining table as well as those of our family and many friends. I have a set of 12 place mats and 12 coasters – all with different designs. They are beautiful and a lasting reminder of him.

The owl, swan and badgers are all 10 inch round place mats, the two butterfly images being 4 inch coasters.
Hubby’s unfulfilled ambition – to be a racing driver – transferred instead to a keyring!

Three pen pots. The image was stamped then pyrographed.
